To Our Absent Backyard Friends (Swiped from Kilmer)

No guest experience will ever be

As fair and lovely as a tree

A tree whose hungry mouth once prest

Against Saratoga’s backyard breast

Now lies lifeless on its side

Slain by NYRA’s arborcide

A tree that would in summer wear

A cloak of green that cooled the air

Breathes no more yet inflicts pain

On we who would not stir champagne

This doggerel barks at fools like he

Vain to think could improve a tree
